For an increasing number of analysts, the therapeutic task of psychoanalysis has gradually widened in scope. The therapeutic task is now seen to require patient and analyst to work together to strengthen, or create psychic structure that was weak, missing, or functionally inoperative. This approach, especially relevant to the treatment of non-neurotic patients and states of mind, stands in stark contrast to more traditional assumptions that the therapeutic task involves the uncovering of the unconscious dimension of a present pathological compromise formation.

Focusing on clinical material at a level of psychic functioning “beyond the pleasure principal,” one more closely associated with pre-verbal and/or massive psychic trauma and primitive mental states, this book explores the shift from working with a mental universe of presences, forgotten, hidden, or disguised, but there for the finding, to a negative universe of voids, where creation of missing structure, most specifically of representations, becomes part of the cure.
