Dear Colleagues,

For a relief from the national as well as APsaA election campaigns and excitement, I invite you to join me in reading and discussant the topical posts on the international website, which at least in my opinion tend to be possibly more scholarly. I say this with apologies to our candidates, who of course can be very erudite and often visionary.

I will list the posts that stood out for me this week followed by the entire weekly menu as usual. Please note that some of the posts in the ANNOUNCEMENTS Category had been noted by me before, but not last week and I review them in case you would like to attend any of the meetings.

1) Being an immigrant of sorts, if anyone is in Paris this November, I suggest attending the conference on “The Wanderings of Transmission”

2) Did you know that Darwin talked about competition? I suggest that the conference on “Male-Male Competition: Globalization, War, & Violence” discussion exploring an evoutionary perspective on globalization, war and violence” may be very interesting:

“Little attention is paid to the fact that Charles Darwin, in his book, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, devoted twelve chapters to male-male competition, describing it as *the law of battle*. Darwin details intra-species male morphological and behavioral differences from molluscs through mammals, arriving finally and specifically at human mammals.”

3) A “different” psychoanalysis in Tehran, same unconscious, different culture. Should be read by western analysts to learn about “globalization of analysis:”

4) Note the specialized test for High school students in NYC – your thoughts?

5) Clumsily translated there is the czech proverb:” man craves the largest piece of the forbidden crust of bread”. It comes to my mind with the NYT article on Boy Scout Files.

6) Please read the timely post on Suicide in Children and Adolescents.

7) While on the subject of politics, culture and the unconscious – a reexamination of the Dora case is an interesting read.

8) The controversy about formula ban in hospitals vs.the better alternative – breast feeding is interesting in contrast to evidence that maternal exhaustion and depression retards babies’ development. Can’t win.

Clearly this was an issue for centuries as evidenced by the popularity of “wet nurses” – probably prior to formula business.

XVII. *Standards* v Diversity

Testing Standards Reduce Diversity In Elite Schools by Edward C. Sullivan from New York Civic on October 14, 2012.

The Specialized High School Achievement Test which the New York City Department of Education uses to select students to eight specialized high schools has come under fire from the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. They have filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education that the test is not predictive of success in these high schools and that its use has led to a diminution of the enrollment of minorities in the schools, which means fewer will enter the work force and the middle class.
