NYPSI Extension Program: The Mind in Conflict: A contemporary focus on the functioning of the mind from the perspective of Modern Conflict Theory, with emphasis on Brenner’s revisions of traditional structural theory and a new appreciation of the ideas of evolutionary biology for understanding the functioning of the mind.

Dr. Buckingham was formerly President of NYPSI and Director of its Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program. He is on the faculty of both NYPSI and NYU Medical Center.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Explain contemporary theory in the functioning of the mind, specifically from the perspective of Modern Conflict Theory.
2. Describe Charles Brenner’s revisions of traditional structural theory.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.
