The Metropolitan Center for Mental Health and The Metropolitan Society of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists Invite you to a Scientific Meeting  Friday, March 27, 2019 – 7:30 PM  THE MEANING OF DIFFERENCE FOR THE LGBTQ CHILD/  PRESENTER: KIMBERLY KLEINMAN, LCSW

In 1986, Richard Isay described three broad stages in homosexual identity formation: a childhood acquisition stage, the consolidation stage of adolescence and early adulthood, and the integration stage of adulthood.  Ms. Kleinman will focus on the early phase of childhood recognition of sexual identity and the meaning this recognition has for the child.  She will also describe her work with adolescent patients of transgender experience and their work around the integration of sexual and gender identity. The universal difficulty with feelings of difference will be discussed. This has specific consequences for transference. Work with parents will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives
Participants will: 1) Identify stages of sexual object choice and gender identity. 2) Understand the developmental meaning of feelings of difference in the latency and adolescent phases. 3) Transferential issues will be identified.

PRESENTER: Kimberly Kleinman, LCSW Certificates in Psychoanalysis of Adults and Children and Adolescents, Contemporary Freudian Society. Faculty: Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Child and Adolescent Program; Contemporary Freudian Society, Harlem Family Institute; Zhendao Institute, and Tongi Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China. Training and Supervising Analyst: FIPA. Co-Editor: From Cradle to Couch, Essays in Honor of Sylvia Brody and Giving New Analysts a Voice.  Grant Recipient: The American Psychoanalytic Association, to co-edit a book of Jacob Arlow’s unpublished papers.

The New York State Education Department has approved this meeting for 2 contact hours (CEUs) for LMSWs, LCSWs, LMHCs and LPs. A certificate will be emailed to those who sign the attendance sheet at the end of the meeting, complete an evaluation and pay an administrative fee of $15. There is no charge for those affiliated with MITPP, MCMH or MSPP.
