Après-Coup Psychoanalytic Association presents
STUDY GROUP: Reading with W..G. Sebald: Fiction as Testimony
Salvatore F. Guido
Paying particular attention to modes of literary and textual rumination that are embedded in Sebald’s prose fiction and essays, this study group proposes to read with him (not to psychoanalyze him), and to pursue some of the effects generated by this unique form of fiction as testimony, a body of work that is as attuned to cultural pathology as it is sensitive to individual trauma. His writing, and much of the literary scholarship that intersects with it, resonate with concerns that are fundamental to psychoanalysis.
Meetings will take place from 2pm–4pm on the following Sundays:
Those interested in participating should contact Salvatore F. Guido at firstname.lastname@example.org or (212) 229-0811. The study group will meet at 201 West 77th Street, 15D, New York, NY.
Before the first meeting, please read The Rings of Saturn. We will also pay attention to selections from The Emigrants, On The Natural History of Destruction, Campo Santo, and A Place in the Country. Along with interviews with Sebald and selected textual analyses of his work, collateral readings include work by Freud, Lacan, W. Benjamin, Levinas and Blanchot.
Salvatore F. Guido is a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City, a member of Après-Coup Psychoanalytic Association, and the author of an essay that recently appeared in differences (29:1, 2018).
