The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of The Contemporary Freudian Society
Foundations of Psychoanalytic Practice
We are pleased to offer a six-week course on Analytic Listening and Concepts beginning Fall 2017. This course qualifies for 9 Continuing Education credits.
This course is suitable for students from a wide variety of backgrounds, including practicing clinicians from all disciplines, recent graduates of Masters-level or Doctoral-level programs, professionals considering changing careers, and anyone interested in exploring the possibility of post-graduate psychoanalytic training.
Analytic Listening and Concepts, Instructor: Hadassah Ramin, LCSW, Dates: October 16, 23, 30, November 6, 13, 20, Time: 6:30-8:00 pm, Location: Upper West Side
The initial consultation is the stage on which patients present the cast of their internal objects. How we listen and what we listen for will be explored with a focus on the initial consultation. Paying close attention to the narrative presented will facilitate identifying the transference, its effect on us – the countertransference – and the way we use this kind of listening as a tool to deepen our understanding of the patient’s relationship to his/her internal objects. This understanding will inform us about how to formulate our interventions in a way that will be useful to the patient.
With the help of readings and clinical vignettes, participants will be sensitized to the difference between hearing and listening, as well as the importance of non-verbal communication.
1. Participants will learn to distinguish between hearing and listening.
2. Participants will learn to discern the symbolic meaning hidden in the concrete communication.
3. Participants will learn the value of reliance on the induced countertransference as a tool to deepen their understanding of the patient’s relationship with their internal objects.
